Message from the Rector

Pakistan is one of the most climate vulnerable countries in the world. It is exposed to a range of threats from the changing climate system. There is increasing likelihood of climate variability and higher intensity of extreme events. These rising risks compel the country to view its development and governance agenda through the climate perspective.

In coming decades, climate change will pose increasing challenges for both urban and rural livelihoods. Pakistan’s concerns emerge from the increased variability of monsoon, receding glaciers, declining water reservoirs, extreme events, such as flooding and droughts, and a host of other climate change related impacts.

The establishment of the Centre for Climate Research and Development (CCRD) is a reflection of the importance COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) has attached to studying climate change impact, vulnerability and adaptation and to developing Pakistan’s research and educational capacity in this field.

In this context the focus of CCRD will be on research, education and training in climate sciences. Our aim is to build CCRD as a Centre of Excellence, with links to leading climate institutions in the region and across the world.

With Best Wishes
Dr. S. M. Junaid Zaidi
