Centre for Climate Research and Development (CCRD), COMSATS IIT, Islamabad organized a "Climate Corner Meeting" regarding solid waste management on Friday 31 March, 2017. Local residents of Tamma village, shopkeepers, officials of Muslim College and students, NGOs like Project Procurement International (PPI), Green Crescent Environmental Engineering Consultants (GCEEC), Health and Rural Development Services (HRDS) Foundation along with members from CCRD, Quality enhancement cell and IT department of COMSATS IIT, Islamabad participated in the said meeting.
An interactive session by resource persons including Dr. Toqeer Ahmed, Hafiz Ilyaz, Dr. Amir Haider Malik and Mr. Sadaat Ali was followed by open discussion with the local community. The participants were educated about the community driven initiatives to improve the overall condition of solid waste management and to play a vital role in saving the environment. Moreover, self-explanatory brochures in local language (Urdu) regarding the consequences of improper dampness of solid waste were distributed among all the participants. About 60 people in total from the said organizations, students and local community participated in the said meeting. Workers from CDA visited the site and disposed of the solid waste and promised to work in future for saving both community health and environment. Participants appreciated the initiative of CCRD to engage people at the community level to raise awareness to keep their areas clean and to take action to remove hazardous items. Climate Corner meetings will be held in other localities to mobile people for a clean and healthy environment.
